Castagnole Monferrato

The town of Castagnole Monferrato is located between Asti (14km), Casale (20km) and Alessandria (25km). It’s set on a ridge at a height of 230 meters above sea level, and surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of lush hills. From here one can admire the some of the spectacular local peaks of the Alps, such as Monviso, Monterosa, Cervino and Montblanc. The name Castagnole comes from the woods of chestnut trees (castagni) which used to cover those hills. Today, those woods have been replaced by vineyards. Although it’s best-known for its agriculture, Castagnole Monferrato is a pretty town, resplendent with picturesque views, lots of character and many historical buildings, some of them dating back to the fifteenth century. The town grew around its two main churches, and incidentally is also home to the largest antique press in Europe.
